Since its launch, ChatGPT's "Search" function has undergone several evolutions in how it retrieves its information. Until now, Bing had been its default search engine, but it appears that ChatGPT has quietly made a major strategic shift: SearchGPT’s answers now come from Google.
A decision that could reshuffle the deck in the AI-powered search war…
What is SearchGPT again?
SearchGPT is an experimental feature available to ChatGPT Plus users. It allows the chatbot to perform real-time web searches through third-party engines, in order to provide more accurate and up-to-date answers to user queries.
Until recently, these searches were primarily conducted via Bing, Microsoft’s search engine. Logical, given that Microsoft is a key partner of OpenAI.
But since early July 2025, a quiet evolution has emerged…
Google replaces Bing in ChatGPT Search
According to an investigation by Barry Schwartz (Search Engine Roundtable) reported by Abondance, several clues have confirmed that the results provided by ChatGPT via the “search” function now come from Google rather than Bing.
Among the clues:
- The snippets and metadata displayed by SearchGPT match those seen on Google.
- Certain phrasings and result structures are typically sourced from the Mountain View engine.
- Bing no longer seems to return some results identified in ChatGPT’s answers.
Even though OpenAI has not (yet) publicly confirmed this change, tests conducted show a clear trend.
Why this change? What are the consequences?
This shift toward Google could be explained by OpenAI’s desire to provide richer, more coherent, and especially better-structured responses—where Bing sometimes showed its limitations.
But beyond response quality, it sends a strong message:
Even generative AIs rely on Google as a primary source of truth.
A message that won’t go unnoticed by SEO specialists and digital professionals.
What it means for SEO professionals
The impact is far from trivial:
- Visibility on Google becomes even more crucial: what's visible on Google can now directly appear in ChatGPT Search's AI responses.
- Zero positions, PAA (People Also Ask), and featured snippets become exposure levers within AI assistants themselves.
- Optimizing content (titles, tags, structure) for Google is indirectly optimizing for LLMs.
It’s therefore another reason to approach SEO in a precise, strategic, and up-to-date way.
